Lutein, meso-zeaxanthin and zeaxanthin are three carotenoids that are highly concentrated in your eye’s macula, where they act as a sunscreen! 

When blue rays from LED light, mobile phones, computer and TV screens, strike your eye, the effect is almost like that of ultraviolet light on your skin when it produces sunburn. Similarly, prolonged exposure to blue and UV light lead to the production of free radicals, which in turn cause damage to the eyes. This is where the role of these three potent carotenoids come into effect. They perform as a sunscreen that filters blue and UV light to protect your eye cells from damage.

A recent study from the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES) confirmed that long-term exposure to blue light accelerates the aging of retinal tissues and is linked to the leading cause of vision loss in adults over 50.

Additionally, lutein, meso-zeaxanthin and zeaxanthin make up three-fourths of the carotenoids in your brain, specifically the areas responsible for cognitive function, data-processing and recall. In a 2014 study, older adults with higher levels of these carotenoids (as measured through macular pigment density), had significantly better global cognition, verbal learning and fluency, recall, processing speed and perceptual speed than those with lower levels.

What makes this formula so special

1. Lutein and Zeaxanthin are present in nature at a ratio of 5:1, which is the exact ratio between Lutein (30mg) and Zeaxanthin (6mg) in this formula. 

2. All three antioxidants, lutein, meso-zeaxanthin and zeaxanthin, in this formula are extracted from the marigold flower, which is widely used as a medicinal plant for its antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Do these carotenoids really work?

In his quest to get rid of his reading glasses and hack his eyesight, world renowned bio-hacker Dave Asprey took lutein, zeaxanthin, and astaxanthin daily in order to get maximum eye support. He used a mixture of 60mg Lutein, 12mg zeaxanthin and 8mg astaxanthin, coupled with eye exercises. Eventually, he was able to restore his vision from 20/80 to 20/15. 

Meanwhile, Dr Michael Mosley, presenter of the BBC's 'Trust Me, I am a Doctor,' decided to put supplements containing macular carotenoids to the test. He took a daily supplement containing lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin for 12-weeks. 

Eye examinations taken before and after the supplement trial found that the macular pigment levels in Dr Mosley’s eye were ‘significantly increased’.

Contrast sensitivity levels, acuity in detail and color perception of yellow and blues were also enhanced in his vision.
